Environmental Sustainability

In the challenging, research-based pharmaceutical industry, we are committed to making high-quality medicines responsibly. We aim to achieve world-class performance by operating safely, minimising our natural resource use, and lessening our impact on the environment. Lilly has made considerable progress in lessening our impact on the environment in Australia in recent years with key goals established to reduce our energy consumption and optimise our waste minimisation.

Focus on local programs

A range of programs have been initiated to achieve these goals, and some of these include:

  • Implementation of a fuel efficient motor vehicle fleet.
  • Introduction of building management system to maximize energy efficiency.
  • Introduction of a solar powered hot water system.
  • Increased focus on waste recycling, using food waste bins and a wormery for composting.
  • The Australian Packaging Covenant (APC*) is a sustainable packaging initiative which aims to change the culture of business to design more sustainable packaging, increase recycling rates and reduce packaging litter. Refer to the 2015-2020 action plan here and the 2014/2015 Annual Report here

With a shared focus on broader community awareness, Lilly Australia also participates in:

    • Earth Hour.
    • Clean up Australia Day.
    • Global Lilly Day of Service.

* Lilly is a signatory to the APC - Award winner 2013 (Top 20 performer in Australia).
